February 21, 2006--VEF, Information Technology Institute (ITI) and College of Technology (COLTECH) of Vietnam National University-Hanoi, will hold a Digital Signal Processing Summer School (DSPSS) in Hanoi from July 17-29, 2006.

The intent of DSPSS is to address a high level of interest and to develop understanding and competency in signal processing among students and researchers in Vietnam. The DSPSS is to offer a fundamental and specialized short training program in signal processing using modern teaching methodologies. The program will last for two weeks with three short courses, namely, Fundamentals of Signal Processing, Wavelets and Filter Banks, and Multimedia Compression. Each course will last forfour days with lectures in the morning and lab experimentsin the afternoon. There will also be seminars on current cutting-edge research and open problems in signal processing. Distinguished American scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of California at San Diego, and Johns Hopkins University will teach DSPSS.

The target audience includes senior undergraduate students, graduate students, instructors and researchers in Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and related areas. Upon successful completion of the DSPSS, each participant will receive a certificate of participation.

Venerable Professor Nguyen Van Hieu said: "This DSPSS is an important follow-up program to the Young Vietnamese Scientists Meeting 2005 that was held in June 2005 in Nha Trang. This is the first step for a long-term program, training talented young scientists on digital signal processing, an increasingly important area in Vietnam. With a group of enthusiastic overseas Vietnamese professors from leading American universities, we have the advantage to develop this area."

"This is the start for a series of digital signal processing courses which will be conducted by American professors in Vietnam. VEF invests its limited resources on enhancing the capacity of science and education in Vietnam. Many signs show that Vietnam may become a strong global competitor in digital signal processing"said Mr. Kien Pham, VEF Executive Director. He continued: "We hope that this DSPSS will help us identify young talents and provide them with training opportunities in the United Stated. With the support from leading American universities, we believe that this will be our strategic outbreak success".

Professor Dinh Dung, Director of Information Technology Institute, Vietnam National University - Hanoi stated: "It is an honor for the Information Technology Institute to be the co-organizer of this first DSPSS. Digital Signal Processing has many important applications that Vietnam has the potential to develop. We have set up a long-term plan to work closely with our American counterparts to improve our capacity on training, research and its applications in Vietnam".

Professor Do Ngoc Minh from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) commented: "DSPSS is a brilliant idea. We are very happy to share our knowledge and experience with our colleagues and students in Vietnam. We highly appreciate the support from VEF and the active participation of the members of the Program Committee as well as the Organization Committee. We believe that DSPSS will be a great success and will be an annual event".
