Workshop on Scientific Research Development and Management

Hanoi

February 16, 2006--The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) announce a workshop on scientific research development and management to be held first in Hanoi and then in Ho Chi Minh City from February 27 to March 3, 2006.

The intent of this workshop is to address the key aspects of research planning, organization, and funding, as well as the practical aspects of conducting and reporting scientific research. Expected outcomes include greater proficiency at conceptualizing a research project, improved project planning and management capabilities, and enhanced familiarity with the successful publication of scientific research in international peer-review journals.

Four American experts from the University of Michigan will travel to Vietnam to lead the workshop. The workshop will target mid-career research professionals who will benefit from practical training and interaction with leading experts in research development and management. The overarching objective is to ground successful scientific researchers and managers in solid research project management philosophy. The workshop will span two days and be offered in two locations.

Dr. Bui Manh Hai, Vice Minister of Science and Technology said: "This is an important event that has been outlined in the Joint Governmental Committee Meeting (JCM) in November 2005. It aims to improve R&D management skills. Obviously, it will help Vietnamese researchers as well as S&T managers to handle their research projects more efficiently."

"The HHS is happy to be a partner in this workshop, which will help to enhance the research development and management abilities of the Vietnamese researchers and managers. Most importantly, it will help to increase the quantity and upgrade the quality of scientific publications in international journals." Dr. Marie Sweeney, Health Attache of HHS commented.

Mr. Kien Pham, VEF Executive Director, said: "This workshop is one of our projects to improve the research ability of Vietnamese scientists. It provides participants in-depth knowledge and hands-on practice in developing and managing research. We highly appreciate the support from MOST, HHS, the U.S. National Academies, and the University of Michigan."
