According to statistics by Vietnam International Education Development, Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), Vietnam has more than 100,000 students studying in 49 countries and territories, 90% of which are self-funded. This number has increased by 10 times during the last 10 years. The United States ranks second among top-choice destinations for Vietnamese students, only after Australia.
In recent years, the number of Vietnamese students choosing to study in the United States has been increasing sharply. Accordingly, Vietnam is also one of the top 10 countries with the most students studying in the United States. Beside its world-class education system, the U.S. Government also has incentive programs and scholarships for Vietnamese students that have resulted in an increasing number of Vietnamese students choosing the United States as their desitination. The most well-known U.S. Government scholarship programs are Fulbright and the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). VEF is an independent U.S. Federal Government agency created by the U.S. Congress in 2000 to create educational exchange activities for Vietnamese nationals to pursue graduate studies or professional development at U.S. universities and for Americans to teach at Vietnamese universities and, thus, build the bilateral relationship between the United States and Vietnam.
