U.S. FACULTY SCHOLAR PROGRAM FAQs

I am having difficulty activating my registered account for the U.S. Faculty Scholar Grants. Could you please help me?

Are social sciences considered eligible fields for the U.S. Faculty Scholar Grants?

I just did a Fulbright in Thailand. Would I be precluded from applying?

Could you please help me to identify the appropriate university/universities and their relevant contact(s) in Vietnam for my teaching proposal?

Can the grant be budgeted to include the U.S. Scholar's salary for the duration of the time that he/she is on leave (without pay) from his/her home institution?

Is the teaching limited to September through June? Would a stretch of time including May, June, July, and August be an option?

  - My proposed teaching period in Vietnam is 3 weeks. I understand that the U.S. Faculty Scholar Grant is for periods of one or two semesters. Can I still apply for this grant?

- Are short courses supported within the program? I would like to offer several series, each consisting of about 10 lectures given during one week.

Our course proposal involves more than one U.S. applicant (instructor) while the on-line application process only allows for a single U.S. applicant (instructor). How should multiple instructors be handled on the application form?

Approximately how many proposals will be funded in the coming year?

I was interested in the U.S. Faculty Scholar Grant. My areas of expertise are in American government, public policy (with substantive foci in rural development, regionalism, workforce development, intergovernmental relations, fiscal health of local governments, interlocal cooperation). Please let me know if my disciplinary background is appropriate for this program.

To prevent any conflict of interest related to receiving Federal government funds for this project, VEF requests that the Faculty Scholar avoid doing non-VEF business during the grant period. Importantly, VEF funds must NOT be used for any purposes other than for the fulfillment of this grant.

I wasn't sure but this might imply that a Faculty Scholar would have to take a leave from their faculty job during the term in which they were teaching the class to avoid doing things like research, administration, or teaching at the home institution. Could you clarify?

I am an American citizen and an Associate Professor; however, my university is in Europe. Am I eligible for applying for this U.S. Faculty Scholar Grants?

The appointment I have at my University is considered a "clinical professorship," This position is based on contributory work to the department, but I am not paid by the department.

Can you clarify my eligibility for the U.S. Faculty Scholar Grant program?

You have provided a date for a mandatory Orientation at the VEF Headquarters in Arlington, VA. Is there any flexibility with this date? Are we obliged to attend the Orientation?

Is associate professor eligible for this program? For your information, I will achieve the rank of associate professor with tenure in late 2012.

Do permanent residents (green card holders) qualify for this program?

I have one question regarding preparation of the proposed budget. It is unclear to me if the total cost for transportation from the US to Vietnam (and the return trip) is to be covered by the host institution in Vietnam. Or, can I request the transportation costs be covered by the VEF?

Will the U.S Faculty Scholar Program be available in the future?

I am a CPA in Portland, Oregon and I have a client that is a US citizen and resident and received a Faculty Scholar Grant from your organization. I am trying to determine the taxability of this grant both in the US and Vietnam. Can you please advise?

Will a small private college qualify as a Vietnamese Partner for this program?

The Call for Proposals states that "Monies cannot be used to pay for a substitute to take the place of the US Faculty Scholar". I take this to mean that a substitute cannot be sent to Vietnam in the place of the selected faculty scholar. Does it mean that monies cannot be used to pay for adjuncts replacing me at The College at Brockport? Please clarify.

Although I have taught introductory biology and advanced courses for over 40 years, in recent times I have been more interested in teaching college teachers how to teach science at the university level. I wonder if my idea is supported for this program or not?
